Durability is a matchup, not a spec

The same toy can last years with one dog and a weekend with another. What matters is the matchup between the toy and your dog's size, jaw strength, and style. Some dogs are shredders who hunt seams. Some are grinders who work one spot patiently. Some are gulpers who try to swallow whatever comes loose, and gulpers need the most caution of all.

So when a label says indestructible, read it as durable for most dogs, then judge the matchup yourself.

How to judge a toy before buying

• Material: solid natural rubber and dense nylon last; fabric shells and thin vinyl do not
• Construction: no seams, no glued-on parts, no squeaker to excavate
• Thickness: the thicker the material between teeth and air, the longer it lives
• Honest sellers: look for real dimensions, real weights, and plain talk about supervision

The retirement rule

Every toy has a service life. Retire a toy when pieces start coming loose, when a rope is down to threads, or when your dog can get a chunk between molars. A well-used toy that gets replaced on time did its job perfectly.
